The €2,400 Lunch Habit: What You Could Do With the Money Instead

Buying lunch every day can cost thousands a year. Here is what the same money could buy, and how a packed hot lunch helps you keep more of it.

Buying lunch out every working day is one of the biggest small expenses most people never question. Spend €10 a day and you are close to €2,400 a year. Spend a little more and the figure climbs fast.

Now imagine you packed lunch instead and spent roughly a third of that. You might save well over €1,500 in a year. That is real money.

What could you do with it?

  • Cover a good chunk of a family holiday
  • Put a proper dent in the home heating oil bill for winter
  • Buy a new set of work boots and a decent waterproof jacket
  • Add to a savings account or pay down a loan

The saving is only part of the story. You also get better food, more control over what goes into it and a lunch break that is not spent in a queue.

The usual objection is that it is a hassle. It does not have to be. Cook once, eat twice. Freeze portions. Defrost one the night before. In the morning, put it in your Portagrub heated lunch box and take it with you. A thermal carry bag keeps everything warmer between the van and your break.

The box is the one-off cost. The saving repeats every week.

Do the maths: Take what you spend on lunch in a typical week, multiply by 48, and see what you get. Then ask what you would rather do with that money.

Wetter food heats faster. If your stew has thickened in the fridge, stir in two tablespoons of water before you clip the lid.
